How to make sense of carbon footprint calculators data

A litre of plant milk or water weighs about one kilogramme/kg. Now imagine that weight multiplied by your daily and monthly and yearly numbers. That’s what all your CO2 weighs. When you consider that CO2 is a gas…

A metric tonne is 1,000 kilos, so prepare to be blown away by how we stack up in a year. A kg is 2.2 pounds and an imperial ton is 907kg.

Air travel CO2 emissions

Air travel’s carbon footprint is getting a lot of attention. So, how much CO2 do you cause to be emitted when flying?

Enjoy truly carbon neutral flights with hemp carbon offsets

Many airlines now offer forestry carbon offsets to passengers, or fund offsets themselves. An issue with forestry is that it can take 30-40 years to show a net CO2 benefit. Do you really want to be offsetting the flight you took today in 2063? And direct air capture (DAC) machines use huge amounts of electricity, taking up to 6 years to capture your required carbon, which is then put in a hole in the ground! If these legacy offset schemes don’t add up for you, try hemp for air travel carbon offset in near real-time, with the carbon captured being used to build new housing and infrastructure. It’s a true win-win-win.

How can I offset my air travel carbon footprint?

Eat less meat, save the planet

We all know that meat, red meat in particular, has a hefty carbon footprint. If you switch a couple of meals a week to a locally-sourced vegan option, how much CO2 can you save? Try our calculator and pass the faux beef! We use the carbon footprint of an average cheeseburger as 4.35kg/CO2 equivalent.

Data Centre – DC – carbon footprint calculator

Data Centres are becoming increasingly essential for our connected lives. DC power consumption depends on many variables, so we’re showing what their minimum carbon footprint could be, based on the average electricity fuel mix, in Ireland, and globally. DC operations mean that they could consume up to 1.6 times the power of their nominal value, measured in megawatt hours of electricity used (MWh), so the carbon footprint could be up to 1.6 times the calculations below!

Some DCs operate on 100% renewable electricity, so have a vastly reduced operational carbon footprint. Even better, they pipe their waste heat into local community heating schemes!

Ireland’s electricity generation fuel mix is heavily dependent on fossil fuels (gas accounted for 57% of energy inputs to electricity generation in 2020, coal and peat accounted for 9%, and oil 2.4%). The fuel mix is key to the footprint.

The contribution of each energy source to C02 emissions is as follows:

  • 0.986 t CO2 eq/MWh for coal-fired plants
  • 0.777 t CO2 eq /MWh for oil-fired plants
  • 0.486 t CO2 eq /MWh for gas-turbine plants

Did you turn the immersion off?

Immersion water heaters are a constant source of stress, and forgetting to turn off the immersion has triggered many a family conflict. As well as hurting your pocket, leaving the immersion on for too long also has a big impact on your carbon footprint and climate change…

How to cut your immersion emissions:

  • Insulate your hot water tank so the water stays warm for longer.
  • Check if you have a thermostatic control to automatically turn the heater off when it reaches the desired temperature.
  • Set the thermostat for a lower temperature (ensuring that water is heated to a minimum of 50C to kill any bacteria in the tank).
  • Use a timer to turn the heater on and off so hot water is ready when you need it. If you have an economy electricity tariff, set your immersion heater to switch on when electricity is cheaper.
